Mice vs. Rats: How to Identify Common Rodents
Mice and rats share some habits, but they differ in size, behaviour and the places they tend to use. Knowing the differences can help you describe what you have seen to a provider.
Size and Appearance
Mice are generally smaller, with smaller droppings and a more delicate build. Rats are larger, with larger droppings and a heavier build. Size alone is not always conclusive, especially for young rats, so note other clues as well.
Droppings and Gnaw Marks
Mouse droppings are usually very small, while rat droppings are larger. Gnaw marks from rats may be larger and more noticeable on wood and stored items.
Where They Are Found
Mice are often found in kitchens, pantries, walls and attics. Rats may also use roofs, garages, outbuildings and outdoor areas, as well as attics and walls.
What to Do Next
Note the size of droppings, where you saw activity, and when you heard sounds. Then consider a rodent inspection. For help specific to each type, see Mice Removal and Rat Removal in Truckee.
